CHAPTER SIX

STACEY couldn’t take her eyes off McClain’s ruggedly stern face, and it was just as well that he’d silently commanded her to cross the room to him and put her hand in his. He’d done that before, and she’d responded automatically, though she wasn’t certain if she liked that or not. McClain reached for her other hand then held them both.

“You look beautiful tonight,” he rasped in that low drawl that was so sexy and dark. One side of his unsmiling mouth curved up. “Not that you don’t look beautiful the live-long day. Just that you’re even more beautiful tonight.”

And then he leaned down to kiss her softly and Stacey actually shuddered at the bolt of crackling heat that shot through her. Their clasped hands between them kept their bodies apart, but a craving for more of this nonthreatening sweetness made Stacey sway a bit closer.

McClain’s mouth eased from hers and she swayed again because she felt dizzy and a little weak. The only coherent thoughts that came together in her brain were, So far, so good…and…maybe this will be all right.

One corner of his handsome mouth quirked and she saw a spark in his dark eyes that let her know he understood her veiled message. To her surprise, he didn’t comment on it, but stayed on the trivial subject he’d started.

“We can always switch sides if you change your mind,” he said as he let go of her hands to reach for the belt of her robe.

But once he’d taken hold of it, he did nothing but roll the satin fabric between his thumbs and fingers.

“I like the feel of satin,” he said, but then he gave the belt a gentle tug to untie it and let the two ends fall to her sides.

And of course, the facings of the robe went slack and parted. McClain’s callused hands eased into the narrow space between the facings and parted them wider as his palms settled on the sides of her waist. Stacey lifted her hands to his hard chest.

Which was a mistake. The hot feel of smooth skin over steely muscle was so amazing that her breath caught. His body was masculinity personified, and everything feminine in her was clamoring with both excitement and fear. He towered over her and the power in his grip alone could
